Using Focal Points in Patio Design

Just as any interior design requires the use of focal points, your hardscaping and outdoor patio design can only benefit from the use of a focal point. An important design element, a focal point is a place where the eye naturally rests.

When planning your patio focal point, consider what it is you want to be the center of attention on your patio. Patio focal points can be a plant arrangement, outdoor furniture, a fountain, or statuary. Try drawing the eye to a sweeping umbrella, graceful chaise lounges, or patio-side koi pond.

When choosing your patio focal point, stay within your general design theme. Make sure your focal point complements your existing design in terms of color, material, and size.
